What Happens During a Psychological and Educational Evaluation? A Parent's Guide to What to Expect
Updated: 6 days ago

For many parents, deciding to schedule a psychological or educational evaluation is a big step. It's natural to have questions like:
What will my child have to do?
Will they be nervous?
How long does it take?
What information will we receive?
At Psychological & Educational Testing Specialists, we understand that seeking an evaluation often comes after months—or even years—of wondering why learning seems more difficult than it should. Our goal is to make the process comfortable, informative, and empowering for both you and your child.
Here's what you can expect.
Step 1: We Get to Know Your Child
Every evaluation begins with understanding the whole child—not just their academic performance.
We'll ask about your child's:
Developmental history
Medical history
Educational experiences
Academic strengths and challenges
Social and emotional functioning
Previous interventions or supports
Your concerns and goals for the evaluation
This conversation helps us tailor the evaluation to answer your specific questions.
Step 2: Individualized Testing

Testing is not like taking a school exam.
Instead, your child works one-on-one with an experienced evaluator in a quiet, supportive environment. Many children tell us the activities feel more like solving puzzles, answering questions, playing memory games, or completing interesting challenges than taking a traditional test.
There is nothing they need to do in preparation. There are no grades and no "passing" or "failing." Every task simply provides information about how your child thinks, learns and processes information.
Step 3: Breaks Are Encouraged
Testing is designed to capture your child's best effort—not to overwhelm them.
We build in breaks as needed, offer encouragement throughout the process, and work at a pace that allows children to remain comfortable and engaged. Snacks, water, and short movement breaks are welcomed.
Our goal is to create a positive experience where children feel supported and successful.
Step 4: Careful Analysis
Once testing is complete, we don't simply generate scores.

We carefully analyze all of the information together, including:
Test results
Behavioral observations
Parent input
Educational history
Teacher information (when available)
Patterns of strengths and areas of need
Looking at the whole picture allows us to understand not only what your child is experiencing, but why.
Step 5: A Comprehensive Report
You'll receive a detailed, easy-to-understand report that explains your child's learning profile and practical recommendations for home and school. We also make suggestions for interventions and supports and provide information that may support eligibility for a Section 504 Plan, an Individualized Education Program (IEP), or standardized testing accommodations, when appropriate
Our reports are designed to be useful - not overwhelming - so you leave with practical next steps.
Step 6: Reviewing the Results Together

One of the most important parts of the process is discussing the results with you.
We'll review the findings, answer your questions, explain recommendations, and help you understand what they mean for your child's education moving forward.
Many parents tell us this meeting brings a sense of relief because they finally have answers and a plan.
